Vietnam Joins World In Peaceful Use Of Nuclear Power

Vietnam has held a consistent view on peaceful and responsible use of nuclear power while ensuring power security and safety, said MST Deputy Minister and Director of Nuclear Power Department, Le Dinh Tien.

An international conference on global nuclear power development and security in 2012 was held here Tuesday by the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology (MST) in cooperation with the British Embassy in Vietnam and the World Nuclear Association.

Vietnam has held a consistent view on peaceful and responsible use of nuclear power while ensuring power security and safety, said MST Deputy Minister and Director of Nuclear Power Department, Le Dinh Tien.

After Japan's Fukushima accident in March 2011, Vietnam has continued to implement a project to develop nuclear power plant for socio-economic development and for power security, with top priority on maximum security and safety, he added.

According to the National Strategy for Power Development, the first nuclear power plant in Vietnam will start operation in 2020. By 2030, total nuclear power output will reach 10,700 MW, accounting for 10.1 percent of the country's total power output, said MST.

Participants at the conference shared a view that nuclear power, with little pollution and greenhouse emission that causes global climate change, has become an important power source. Nuclear power is an important part of many countries' power industries.

However, together with peaceful use of nuclear power, nuclear security and control of nuclear proliferation, as well as safety for nuclear power plants against natural calamities, have become grave concerns for people worldwide, they noted.
